This year's winner was the paper “A General Framework for Correlating Business Process Characteristics” by Massimiliano de Leoni, Wil van der Aalst, and Marcus Dees. At BPM 2023 in Utrecht, the award was given to the most influential paper presented at BPM 2013 in Beijing, China and BPM 2014 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The selection was made by the Steering Committee of the BPM conference series and is based on the impact of the paper on the BPM field (both from a scientific and practical viewpoint), number of citations (Google Scholar and Scopus), technical quality, and presentation.

In 2014, the paper “A General Framework for Correlating Business Process Characteristics” was also invited to be extended for a special issue of the journal Information Systems based on BPM 2014. Also, this extended paper “A general process mining framework for correlating, predicting and clustering dynamic behavior based on event logs”, is highly cited, and the ideas and software were adopted by many other researchers.

This is a wonderful recognition of the work, which is still very relevant. Most people working on machine learning and process mining still extract process features in an ad-hoc manner (e.g., using Python). This leads to unnecessary work and incomparable evaluation results.  This still happens too often. Therefore, the work remains relevant.
